Introduction

Water is the basis of life. However, in the Nishad settlement of Gram Sabha Ramchandipur Dhaab (Reta area), Uttar Pradesh, life itself is under threat. This area, with a population of approximately 2,500 people, has been facing a severe shortage of safe drinking water for several years. Field visits and community interactions conducted by Mahila Sansthan (MASS) have revealed the alarming reality of this crisis.

Contaminated Water: The Root Cause of Illness

Local women and men reported that when water is drawn from hand pumps or other sources, it turns reddish-yellow in color and emits a strong foul odor. Despite its poor quality, residents are compelled to use this water for drinking and cooking due to the absence of alternatives.

As a result of consuming this contaminated water:

  • Gastrointestinal illnesses are persistent

  • Children frequently suffer from stomach pain

  • The health of women and elderly people is severely affected

This situation represents not only a public health crisis but also a violation of human dignity and the fundamental right to life.

Women and Children Are the Most Affected

In the Nishad settlement, the responsibility of collecting and managing water largely falls on women. Consequently, women and young children are the most adversely affected by unsafe water. A significant portion of household income is spent on medical treatment for sick children, which in turn negatively impacts education and nutrition.

Efforts by Mahila Sansthan Toward Solutions

Recognizing the seriousness of the issue, Mahila Sansthan (MASS) has initiated concrete steps to address the crisis. The organization is:

  • Engaging in dialogue with district-level authorities

  • Raising the drinking water crisis before state-level departments

  • Working in coordination with educational and social organizations on:

    • Health awareness

    • Access to safe drinking water

    • Continuity of children’s education

The objective is not merely to highlight the problem but to move decisively toward sustainable and long-term solutions.

The Need for Collective Action

The water crisis in the Nishad settlement of Ramchandipur Dhaab is not limited to a single village. It reflects the reality of thousands of marginalized communities that continue to be deprived of safe drinking water. There is an urgent need for joint action by the government, administration, civil society organizations, and concerned citizens to address this issue effectively.

Conclusion

Safe drinking water is not a privilege—it is a fundamental human right. The people of the Nishad settlement also deserve a healthy and dignified life. Mahila Sansthan (MASS) remains committed to this struggle, and it is hoped that through collective efforts, safe and clean drinking water will soon be ensured in this area.
